Driving your social media with SMART goals

Driving your social media with SMART goals

Expanding your business through the use of social media is a very smart decision; however, to do this successfully, you ought to set SMART goals.

The use of SMART goals allows you to set realistic goals that are trackable; their implementation into your planning for online marketing is more likely to see you reach your goals.

SMART goals are divided into five focus areas, making sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timely.

Specific
Break down your mission into one (or several) specific goal(s). Narrow in on what you are trying to achieve and make it as specific as possible, so that you can accurately measure if you are on track or not. Focus on the who, what, where, when and why. For example, rather than setting a goal of gaining 5,000 followers on social media, a goal of reaching 5,000 Instagram followers within two months would be more specific.

Measurable
There needs to be some scale or criteria to measure whether you are on track to achieving your goal. Figure out what this criterion will be before commencing your goal. For the example given above, a way of measuring if you are on track may involve tracking how many new followers you get each day and using the Instagram Insight tool to gauge how effectively your posting is and how your followers are engaging with your content.

Achievable
While it is necessary to be ambitious to achieve great things, your goals still need to be in the realm of reality. For instance, setting a goal of reaching 2 million followers in 1 week is unrealistic for most businesses. Before setting out on your goal, do some research so that you can decide what is and is not achievable.

Relevant
Ensure that the goal you are working towards achieving is in line with your overall vision for your business. Is your client base one that uses Instagram, or is there a more suitable platform you could be used instead to grow your business, such as Facebook or Linkedin?

Timely
Your goals should involve a time frame for conclusion. There is no point in setting a goal of reaching 5,000 followers for example if there is no time frame in which you wish to reach this goal by; you could reach 5,000 but without a proper time frame it could take you 10 years. You need to set a realistic deadline. You can be undertaking several SMART goals concurrently, and they can be short, medium or long-term.
